Say hello to GDPR

Your inbox has no doubt been inundated with a flood of emails from companies asking you to update your data preferences or take note of changes to their privacy policy. What’s going on?!

In case you haven’t heard, the EU has overhauled data protection legislation and made the biggest change in the arena for 20 years. The new regulatory framework is known as GDPR which stands for General Data Protection Regulation and it sets a new standard for how companies manage and protect the personal data of EU citizens. The law comes into effect today!

So what exactly is “personal data”?

It’s any data that enables you to identify a specific individual. Examples include name, address, phone number and IP address. It’s important to note that anonymised or aggregated data does not constitute personal data.

GDPR classifies two different types of personal data. There’s the type listed above and then there’s more sensitive stuff like sexual orientation, religious beliefs, biometric data etc which is classified as “Special Category” data. At Resource Guru we don’t collect any “Special Category” data.

What does this mean for you?

GDPR introduces a few new rights for individuals. Below is a summary of the most important ones, but you can find a full list on the ICO website.

Right to erasure

This is also known as the ‘right to be forgotten’. The GDPR introduces a right for individuals to have personal data erased. This right is not absolute and only applicable in certain circumstances. For more detail, please read this article on the ICO website.

The right to be informed

Individuals have the right to be informed about the collection and use of their personal data. This is a key transparency requirement under the GDPR. The right to be informed covers some of the key transparency requirements of the GDPR. It is about providing individuals with clear and concise information about what you do with their personal data.

Right to data portability

The right to data portability gives individuals the right to receive personal data they have provided to a controller in a structured, commonly used and machine readable format.
