But, it could also refer to other margins such as retention or overhead margins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are agency profit margins?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"callout callout--protip\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An<\/span><b> agency profit margin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the percentage of revenue that becomes profit. It is used to give an insight into an agency\u2019s overall profitability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be calculated in a few ways, including net profit margin, gross profit margin, and operating profit margin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"callout callout--default\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u26a0\ufe0fBe aware:<\/strong> Don\u2019t get the definitions for \u201cmargins\u201d and \u201cprofit margins\u201d mixed up with \u201cprofit\u201d and \u201cprofitability\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-to-calculate-agency-profit-margins\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to calculate agency profit margins<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get us started, let\u2019s talk about profit margins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve said, there are a few different ways to calculate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agency profit margins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two most common methods are to use gross profit margin, or net profit margin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agency gross profit margins<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"callout callout--definition\">\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What is a gross profit margin?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gross profit margin for agencies takes the amount left over when you subtract the cost of selling services or goods from your overall revenue (i.e. the total amount of money you bring in). To calculate this, subtract your delivery costs from your revenue. Delivery costs include the cost of materials and labour used to deliver your services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve calculated that delivery profit, you can use this formula to determine your delivery profit margin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other agency profit margins we\u2019ve looked at give you a picture of the overall agency\u2019s performance. Profit, of course, shows how your revenue translates into money that you can reinvest in your business. That, by proxy, creates a higher retention rate and more predictable revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;ve got a client that is generating 25 &#8211; 30% of your total income and you aren&#8217;t delivering the project very well, you&#8217;re just amplifying the risk. Chances are that they\u2019ll walk.
