And I\u2019m just a content writer. How? But that\u2019s not the point. At least, not the only one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We seek alignment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guru Gathering is more than just a milestone on our social calendars. It\u2019s where our leadership team shares their vision and strategy for the next 12 months. Resource Guru prides itself on being open and inclusive.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No discussion, as long as it\u2019s respectful and constructive, is off-limits. Even big-picture ones. At the Gathering, we share feedback with the co-founders on the strategy. Then, we return home confident about what we\u2019re about to execute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We get to know each other better<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When\u2019s the last time you asked your manager how to make a Negroni? Or the CTO about whether or not Metallica are really a \u201cmetal\u201d band?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Guru Gathering, we get a refreshing opportunity to have conversations like this. They help us connect in a way that makes us more open with each other, ultimately leading to more productive collaboration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t do formal \u201cteam building\u201d at these events. Trust exercises aren\u2019t needed when you build trust through daily actions like practicing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radicalcandor.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radical Candor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as we do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, at these Gatherings, we hang out, because we think that\u2019s important. The next morning, the majority of us headed home, though a few of us opted for an extended stay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we should have been exhausted by all the above, the general consensus was that we were leaving energized and optimistic for a winning 2025. So, all-in-all, you could say the trip was a success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Isnt-an-in-person-meet-up-for-a-fully-remote-company-a-contradiction\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t an in-person meet-up for a fully remote company a contradiction?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote working\u2019s growing to be somewhat controversial. Take the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/danpontefract\/2024\/09\/20\/why-amazon-should-fold-its-5-day-return-to-office-card\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coverage on Amazon\u2019s decision to return to the office 5 days a week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We believe it\u2019s a force for good, and the data backs us up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buffer.com\/state-of-remote-work\/2023\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffer\u2019s State of Remote Working report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us 98% of people would recommend remote working. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/03\/30\/about-a-third-of-us-workers-who-can-work-from-home-do-so-all-the-time\/#:~:text=The%20advantages%20and%20disadvantages%20of%20working%20from%20home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research on remote work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows the majority (56%) believe it positively impacts their ability to meet deadlines and get work done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We believe work\u2014and excellent work at that\u2014happens async. We keep meetings to a minimum, even when we\u2019re collaborating online-only. In the words of our company handbook, this lets us &#8220;get stuff done with less interruption and with higher efficiency.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is our default. However, we acknowledge that seeing each other in person adds another layer to our ability to work as a team. That said, we think an official work trip once a year <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">works<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We encourage\u2014and have a dedicated budget\u2014for team members who want to spend more time in-person. These are \u201cunofficial\u201d gatherings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/meredithlawlor_resourceguru-activity-7193612232063168513-PuMm\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\">Our most recent meet-up took place in Prague<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This set up offers us the best of both worlds when combined with an internal commitment to prioritizing employee welfare while working remotely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our overall opinion on this is that meeting in person works for fully remote teams\u2014when done well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats-culture-got-to-do-with-it\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s culture got to do with it?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most visible injection of culture at Guru Gathering 2024 was the presence of the two live musicians, but it goes quite a bit deeper.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we come together, we get a first-hand glimpse into how our colleagues embody our company values. Here are just a few examples I noticed over the three days:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We dare to be different<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This thought occurred to me beforehand, but an \u201call expenses paid trip to Portugal\u201d seemed a bit extravagant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, just because it\u2019s not the \u201cnormal\u201d way to do a company catch up doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s incorrect. After all, we don\u2019t have all the traditional overheads like offices and all that goes into them. Therefore, we can reallocate what we would be spending there on Guru Gatherings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We value speed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, we physically raced each other at go karting. However, the day two presentations showing all the team had achieved in the past year brought this value home even more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I think about the sheer volume of launches, it really reiterates that this team does move fast. And hardly ever break things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We obsess over delighting customers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our customer success and engineering teams graciously handed over a few hours of their Guru Gathering to handle a customer request. No grumbling involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re open and inclusive<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned this, but we get face-to-face time with folks from every department. Without the usual pressures of taking up their valuable time, the forum opens up to asking anyone anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I probably took advantage of this the most in Porto, since I\u2019m a newbie. What took me aback was how everyone went the extra mile with their answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone offered added context, insight and\u2014crucially\u2014kindness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We strive to be masters of our craft<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, it takes vulnerability to get in a single room and welcome anyone from any department to critique your performance from the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, at Resource Guru, it just serves to encourage us, because we\u2019re always eager to get better. And better. And better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats-next\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s next?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We plan to do it all again next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Location ideas are already floating around but, for now, it\u2019s business as usual. If a bit atypical. We\u2019ll continue to break the mold by charging ahead async, away from each other, and quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way we dare to be different works for us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our latest employee survey showed that 100% of employees agree that Resource Guru creates a workplace that supports a healthy balance between work and their personal lives. 100% also agreed that the company invests in and supports learning and development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been told that I haven\u2019t drank the company Kool Aid yet\u2014I\u2019ve never been a fan in general, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, the main takeaway of the Guru Gathering for me was that this company makes you feel like anything but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the content writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a true level playing field where people get on with their work and do their best at it. I\u2019d say that\u2019s a solid indication of a quality culture.
