But it might not even feel like stress. That\u2019s why it can sometimes be hard to catch the signs of burnout early. Let\u2019s look at the cause behind the effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats-causing-burnout\"><\/span><b>What\u2019s causing burnout?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we think about burnout, we often think about \u201cjust\u201d being overworked. But it\u2019s much more complex than that. And in recent years, the move to remote and async work environments has added additional layers to the \u201ctraditional\u201d burnout. <\/span>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/lead\/preventing-employee-burnout-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee burnout report<\/a> by Indeed yielded frightening results. They found that over half (52%) of survey respondents were experiencing burnout in 2021. The previous year, that number was 43%.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, remote workers are the ones at the highest risk of burnout as they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Struggle with work-life balance<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Feel like they can&#8217;t unplug<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experience a lack of control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have concerns about job security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deal with perceptions of unfairness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the above can contribute to burnout. If we don\u2019t know how to spot signs early and are able to remove (or at least manage) contributing factors, companies are looking at a hefty price tag.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-real-cost-of-team-burnout\"><\/span><b>The real cost of team burnout<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team burnout is a spectrum of emotions and experiences with serious consequences for employees, projects, and companies. If we\u2019re talking money, this means annual damages of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceridian.com\/blog\/cost-of-burnout-healthcare-workforce\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$225.8 billion in absenteeism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbswk.hbs.edu\/item\/national-health-costs-could-decrease-if-managers-reduce-work-stress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$190 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in healthcare costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phwoar. That\u2019s a pretty penny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprising that in 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified burnout as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201coccupational phenomenon\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that negatively impacts employees. Soon after, burnout became the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sairahashman\/2022\/05\/31\/why-tackling-burnout-is-a-business-imperative-in-the-face-of-the-great-resignation\/?sh=29cef0464b24\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">driving force behind the Great Resignation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as employees chose work-life balance over toxic workplaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as a project manager, is it all just doom and gloom when you hear the B word? Not really. There are ways to resolve and prevent team burnout. The first step is to acknowledge the telltale signs\u2014low engagement, missed deadlines, lower quality work, and a general withdrawal from work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind, though, that there isn\u2019t a fixed set of signs to sound off alarm bells, so you need to constantly be in tune with how your team is feeling. Then, work on a consistent plan to provide support, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/workload-management-tips-for-project-managers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manage workloads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and improve productivity with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/project-scheduling-101\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better planning and scheduling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s take a look at what you can do to prevent burnout before it\u2019s too late.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-you-can-help-your-team-with-burnout\"><\/span><b>How you can help your team with burnout<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From creating a healthy work environment to managing schedules and leading by example, here\u2019s how you can prevent your team from burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Promote a team culture of psychological safety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological safety is paramount to dealing with team burnout and the overall health of your team. Simply put, when employees feel their concerns will be heard without repercussions, they will be more open and communicative about their experience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, not every team member will feel comfortable telling you they are burned out\u2014after all, admitting you need help is hard. Plus, many people fear it will make them seem incapable or weak.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One survey revealed that only 51% of employees <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/employee-mental-health-in-an-uncertain-world-shifting-from-a-state-of-crisis-to-a-culture-of-mental-wellness-301619204.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel safe discussing their mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at work, which means we need to work harder to remove the stigma attached to it. This is especially true of women and minorities, who are likely to experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/01\/help-your-team-beat-wfh-burnout\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher levels of burnout<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/03\/diversity-and-authenticity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hesitate to open up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at their workplaces because they feel invisible.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make psychological safety more than a footnote in your company handbook, be open-minded and empathetic when teammates pour their hearts out. This can be tough, especially if feedback concerns your own decisions and processes as a manager. But research suggests <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/09\/managing-through-crunch-time-without-burning-out-your-team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effective leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> practice active listening, minimize barriers between themselves and the team, and maintain an openness to different viewpoints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assure your teams that they can speak their minds without fear, and more importantly, let them. Remind them that your job is to help them do their best work, not to excuse or defend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/resource-management-plan-mistake\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad resource management decisions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But most importantly, don\u2019t wait until you see the first signs of burnout to build trusted relationships with your team. Psychological safety isn\u2019t fostered overnight. It\u2019s when times are good that team members are most receptive to building a rapport, not when they\u2019re already reeling under pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Build downtime into team workloads<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a project manager, you have a not-so-secret weapon to keep burnout at bay\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the power to manage your team\u2019s workloads<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Workload management is a proactive way to protect your employees\u2019 mental health and keep your projects on track, and it has a far deeper impact than any wellness stipend or fitness membership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 9 out of 10 organizations worldwide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/08\/what-wellness-programs-dont-do-for-workers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offer a wellness initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of some kind. And yet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.groovnow.com\/blog\/is-burnout-still-on-the-rise-in-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team burnout is on the rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even in 2022. Our brains are wired for about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/wellness\/productivity-focus-work-tips\/2021\/05\/31\/07453934-bfd0-11eb-b26e-53663e6be6ff_story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4-5 hours of deep focus work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a day; this is when we are most productive. Project deadlines are important, but if your team operates on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/false-sense-urgency-amber-vanderburg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">false sense of urgency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all the time, it\u2019s time to recalibrate and reset the work culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your team is already feeling burned out, slow down and take a collective \u201cdeep breath\u201d with your team. Help your team prioritize their tasks into \u201curgent&#8221; and \u201cimportant\u201d categories. Then focus on what they can realistically accomplish. Adjust deadlines and expectations and revisit them periodically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, it might be urgent to communicate with a customer about the status of a task, so that\u2019s an opportunity to coach a struggling team member to recognize its urgency. But a brainstorming session could fall into the \u201cimportant\u201d bucket and can likely be pushed to the next day, or you may need to pull in another teammate to help out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not that your team members don\u2019t know what the priority items are, but if they\u2019re overwhelmed, your \u201cpermission\u201d to shuffle things around can ease some of their stress. Ultimately, your decisions should help teams feel a sense of relief and support, so they feel like they have a chance for a comeback instead of spiraling down the burnout path.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Make time-off conversations a part of your check-ins<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best managers are those who are genuinely invested in helping their teams schedule and enjoy their paid time off without worrying about work. This means regularly reminding your team that vacations are a part of their compensation package and that they have a right to take a break. Include time-off conversations in your one-on-one check-in agenda\u2014you\u2019ll build trust with your direct reports, and you get to discuss a fun topic like vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that a week or two of vacation does not resolve burnout. But it can help team members get mental distance and come back with a fresh perspective on tasks and a creative solution to a problem. Especially if they haven\u2019t taken time off in the past several months, it\u2019s likely a big factor in feeling burnt out. Your job is to find out whether their workloads felt so heavy that they couldn\u2019t take time off without <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/avoid-project-delays\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">putting a project in jeopardy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or if they need to be reminded to take breaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it\u2019s the first scenario, there\u2019s an issue with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/resource-capacity-planning-guide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capacity planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/features\/leave-management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leave management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When you sign on new customers and forecast project needs, you also need to factor in vacations and potential sick days and plan project milestones accordingly. If you offer an unlimited or flexible time-off policy, encourage them to take a minimum of 3-4 weeks every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your team knows that time off is recorded and workloads are planned accordingly, it makes taking vacations a breeze and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/get-on-top-of-projects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coming back to work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> less stressful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.
