With the pandemic putting a stop to life as we knew it, most of the team hadn\u2019t seen each other since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why this year, we decided to go big \u2013 <em>South Africa big<\/em>. Alignment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alignment is crucial for any business, and admittedly, a challenge even for the most seasoned and well-respected orgs around. While we remain a comparatively small and nimble team, Resource Guru has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gone from 12 to 19 emp<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loyees this year, with some forming entirely new teams. That\u2019s why having alignment and clarity as we move into the next phase of growth together is essential to not just our success, but also to making our customers successful.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The foundation of alignment comes down to one thing: <i>having a shared vision<\/i>. That\u2019s why our cofounders kicked off our coworking day by asking if everyone was aware of Resource Guru\u2019s vision. By a show of hands, we could quickly gauge where we needed to fill in the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also important to remind people of the vision. Because in our everyday work, it\u2019s easy to lose sight of why we\u2019re doing what we\u2019re doing. Bringing all our efforts back to a shared vision is an effective way of not only driving alignment but a welcomed reminder of what we\u2019re here to do: <i>help people use their time more effectively<\/i>.So what\u2019s our vision here at Resource Guru? It\u2019s simple: <i>Give teams superpowers so they can get the best out of their people and resources, master their time, and succeed<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>How do we do that? By building <a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/\">the best resource management tool<\/a> out there. \ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Getting to know each other:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote work comes with a lot of benefits, but there are some innately human behaviors that require us to go off-screen and in-person. It\u2019s no secret that connecting with each other and building relationships is better done face-to-face, human to human.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With \u201cthe guru\u201d leading the way, we like to do things a little differently. In Cape Town, that meant choosing a power boat trip over puzzles and a Table Mountain excursion over trust falls. Because we believe that having experiences together is more valuable than any typical team-building exercise.<\/p>\n<p>(Find out exactly what we got up to in the next section!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Getting stuff done: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, this was also the time to get to work. But not in the traditional sense. As the team packed their bags for a day of co-working at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workshop17.co.za\/va-waterfront\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workshop 17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a packed day full of education, insights, and alignment was waiting.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Team leads from engineering, design, marketing, customer success, QA, and people ops took the stage to share what they\u2019re working on along with challenges and successes, and what\u2019s next. The goal? For everyone to get some more insight into each team and understand how they operate, what\u2019s important to them, and how their work aligns with our overall business goals.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our-team-retreat-schedule-%E2%80%93-Breaking-bread-and-building-bonds\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our team retreat schedule \u2013 Breaking bread and building bonds<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, why Cape Town you might wonder? Well, as it so happens, one of our founders, Andrew, is from South Africa, as is our CTO, Kevin. Say no more, this year it was time to bring the gurus \u201chome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, the team was buzzing with excitement as we signed off the last Friday before the team retreat. With a week full of adventures ahead of us, people packed their passports and Pleo cards, readying for the team retreat of a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3672 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/slack-signoff.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"558\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arrival days<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team arrived for the most part in two batches, one arriving Sunday morning and the other, Monday morning. While slightly groggy from the long journey, we arrived full of anticipation and excitement. (Plus, no jet lag is always a bonus!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The arrival days had no schedule, apart from a 7 pm team dinner Monday evening once everyone had arrived and got their bearings. This was the very first opportunity for everyone to sit down together and share a meal \u2013 and a few bottles of Pinotage, of course, South Africa\u2019s signature grape variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the good times didn\u2019t end at dinner. Everyone gathered in Vice Guru Percy\u2019s room for a celebratory team toast accompanied by some guru goodies. New team t-shirts and totes had arrived!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3674\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3674\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3674\" src=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/guru_goodie.jpg\" alt=\"Guru goody bag\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>All the guru goodies, including a new t-shirt, tote bag, fresh business cards along with some local items like kikoi and a frame made of sustainably sourced ostrich eggshells.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Day 1: Powerboat trip and Groot Constantia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What better way to start the day than out on the open sea? The team jumped on our transfer bus to Millers Point where our vessels awaited. After most of us had lathered up in SPF 50 (some of us multiple times), we boarded the boats and set off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We spotted baboons and ostriches on Buffel Bay Beach and got a glimpse of Cape Point Lighthouse as we cruised around the surprisingly still waters of False Bay. Jan captured our curious friends beautifully.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nAfter a stroll and lunch in the quaint Kalk Bay, we shuttled off to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grootconstantia.co.za\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groot Constantia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, South Africa\u2019s oldest wine farm, established in 1685.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in the beautiful Capetonian hills, we walked across the grounds over to the most important building of them all: the one where the wine tastings happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3677\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3677\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3677\" src=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/wine-tasting.jpg\" alt=\"The team at Groot Constantia.\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The dream team (post wine tasting, obviously).<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nFeeling appropriately toasty, and some of us carrying bottles of newfound favorites, we headed back to the hotel in Camps Bay to get ready for our evening meal and to rest up for a day of co-working.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Day 2: Co-working at the waterfront<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every quarter, we wrap things up with what we call a \u201cGuru Huddle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, we had the opportunity to do this in person. Team leads had prepared presentations (including the gifs necessary to drive home the message) and one after the other, they shared learnings from this year to date and what\u2019s to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what we covered:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Vice Guru<\/b> <b>Andrew<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kicked things off by talking about our mission and how it relates to our product, and what we\u2019re building toward.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Vice Guru Percy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the five metrics we care about<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> + which teams are responsible along with things to celebrate such as big customers we\u2019ve landed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Engineering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talked about horizontal and vertical scaling and how it\u2019ll drive growth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Talent &amp; People<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took the opportunity to welcome some new starters in person, shared our eNPS score, and gave everyone an update on what\u2019s next in the hiring pipeline \u2192 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/join-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open roles this way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, folks!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Marketing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared the good and the bad from Q3 and unveiled their Q4 OKRs featuring some out-of-this-world Nicholas Cage gifs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Customer Service <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared some customer news along with challenges and opportunities, but most excitingly \u2013 a new churn fighting tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Design <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gave us a look into the design journey and called for more cross-functional work with the design team. Big like!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>QA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allowed us to peek into the \u201cguru test suite\u201d and talked about our QA philosophy. Most of us headed to the nearby foodcourt to hunt down Boerewors (pronounces BOO-ruh-VORS), the South African sausage traditionally made out of minced meat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3702\" style=\"width: 678px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3702\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3702\" src=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sauss-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"397\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The ultimate lunch.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After enjoying what can only be described as a South African feast, we headed back to Workshop 17 for the team exercise: World Caf\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never heard of World Caf\u00e9 before? (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_V6AUyf_vQI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch an explainer video here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) Few of us had heard of it before the exercise was shared the week before the team retreat. But, in short: it\u2019s an engagement process rooted in two core principles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As humans, we want to talk to each other about things that matter to us<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If and when we do, we can create collective power from shared knowledge and ideas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes it a great tool for ideation and collaboration between different teams. Our task? Return to our remote HQ with one or more ideas to implement that will support our growth targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, we can\u2019t share what came out of the exercise \u2013 even gurus need to keep secrets sometimes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud83d\ude09<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what we can say is that there were plenty of ideas going around, and hopefully we can reveal them to the rest of the world in the not-too-distant future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch this space!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Day 3: Table Mountain and Winelands cycle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South African weather gods were not on our side this morning. We glanced up towards Table Mountain where the infamous \u201ctable cloth\u201d (aka clouds) engulfed the famous landmark. And do you know what\u2019s better than a wine tasting? A wine tasting on wheels. As bad weather moved in from the mountains, we enjoyed oysters, steak, and an open fireplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things could most certainly have been worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our last evening together as a team was made extra special by, well, more wheels! Because is there a better way to arrive at a restaurant than in a vintage car? We boarded our shuttle bus one last time as a team and headed to Boulders Beach for the last activity on the agenda \u2013 it was penguin time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Simon\u2019s Town, a protected colony of African penguins live their best lives. Breeding season had just ended in August, and we got to see some fluffy youngsters cuddling up to their parents. There was also a debate about whether one penguin was protecting a rock or an actual egg. Well at the restaurant, a surprise was waiting for our Vice Guru duo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admittedly, at Resource Guru, we don\u2019t celebrate our successes enough. But this year we reached a huge milestone as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/resource-guru-turns-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resource Guru turned 10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and while we didn\u2019t celebrate in person at the time, this event sure warranted a surprise. As we walked into the restaurant, two huge silver balloons floated above our table. There were cards, cake, and two delightfully surprised cofounders!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great ending to a memorable week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3689\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3689\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3689\" src=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>To the next 10!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now, time to get more serious. After four days of quality time together, apart from new connections and memories for life, what learnings did we take back to the northern hemisphere with us?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our-team-retreat-learnings\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our team retreat learnings<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team retreats are just as much about learning as they are about building connections. These are the biggest learnings from our week together:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>People want purpose <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purpose comes from understanding our \u201cwhy.\u201d Why we\u2019re doing what we\u2019re doing and what we\u2019re working towards. This is where having a shared understanding of the company vision and creating alignment comes into the picture.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>We need to move faster<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 One of our values is to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">move fast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We\u2019re not satisfied we\u2019ve delivered on this of late. As we ramp up the teams, we\u2019ll also be able to increase our speed and gain more momentum together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>We\u2019re at a crucial stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 The whole world is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going remote<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Resource Guru is an important tool for companies undergoing this transition. Being a small and product-led company for a long time, now it\u2019s more important than ever to bring in new perspectives and learn from each other as the team grows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remote-first should mean people-first<\/b> \u2013 While we champion the remote-first model, spending time together in person is invaluable to understanding how people communicate, what motivates them, and what their working style is. By having that understanding, we\u2019re all much better equipped for collaboration and taking on our growth targets together.
