{"id":3554,"date":"2022-08-02T09:11:07","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T09:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/?p=3554"},"modified":"2024-03-04T15:31:23","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T15:31:23","slug":"productivity-is-personal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/time-management\/productivity-is-personal","title":{"rendered":"Productivity is personal: Discover how to manage yours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I\u2019m writing this, my flight from Stockholm to Edinburgh has been delayed by two hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve done all the bits already, the coffee, picked up a book, and pretty much all the time killing airport activities besides that oh-so-delicious airport pint and the awkwardly placed massage chairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now what? People watching, that\u2019s what. (In a non-creepy way, obviously.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m sat down at a gate-side cafe and as I\u2019m pondering over the lives of others, I spot someone unbothered by the noise around them, head down engaging in what we&#8217;d call &#8220;deep work&#8221; these days. Next, one (not-so-groundbreaking) thought strikes me: productivity is personal. While this has always been the case, it\u2019s something that\u2019s become particularly apparent post covid outbreak. For many companies, it\u2019s been a true wake-up call.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the fact that we all need different things to be happy and successful in our jobs is pretty much a no-brainer. But not long ago, even in the arguably progressive industry of tech \u2013 it wasn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From hustle culture to burnout culture<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in my career, I, like many others working in tech, thought \u201cthe hustle\u201d was cool. Work at any given opportunity. Always be productive. Always deliver. And always, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be optimizing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeez, I need an airport pint just thinking about it. It\u2019s simply unrealistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s why hustle culture is toxic. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/headversity.com\/the-toxicity-of-hustle-culture-the-grind-must-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the underlying behavior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that drives it puts our bodies in a state of fight or flight. As you might already know, there\u2019s nothing healthy about that. It triggers the release of the stress hormone cortisol, and when released over an extended period of time, it can lead to burnout if you don\u2019t get any rest. And that\u2019s not quite how you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/team-management-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build an all-star team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had just joined a startup in the Bay Area and we were in an Uber from downtown San Francisco back to Palo Alto. There were no meetings scheduled, no urgent work \u2013 yet we had our laptops out, hot spotting from someone\u2019s phone. I was trying to write a blog post and my colleague was going through his notes from a sales call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t think of a worse place to get anything done (let alone do it well) than an Uber on the loud and pothole-riddled highway between the two cities. That time would have been much better spent connecting with my coworkers, sharing stories, discussing a work-related issue, or even disconnecting for a bit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But no, working in an Uber in the Mecca of tech, was perceived as \u201ccool,\u201d as hustling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today I know better.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_82_2 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-custom ez-toc-container-direction\">\n<div class=\"ez-toc-title-container\">\n<p class=\"ez-toc-title\" style=\"cursor:inherit\">In this article \ud83d\udcd6<\/p>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-title-toggle\"><\/span><\/div>\n<nav><ul class='ez-toc-list ez-toc-list-level-1 ' ><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-1\" href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/time-management\/productivity-is-personal\/#The-WFH-hustle\" >The WFH hustle<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-2\" href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/time-management\/productivity-is-personal\/#Master-your-own-productivity\" >Master your own productivity<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-WFH-hustle\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WFH hustle<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the height of the pandemic, hustle culture evolved into burnout culture. Our sometimes office-warming bodies were placed under a stay-at-home order and while many of us discovered the benefits of working from home, being constantly \u201con\u201d reached new levels. Because when your work is always where you are, it\u2019s hard to disconnect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It had the same traits as hustle culture \u2013 but worse. With tools such as Slack and Microsoft Teams promoting an \u201cinstant reply\u201d culture, you\u2019d often see messages along the lines of, \u201chaving dinner now, will look at this after.\u201d Work-life conflicts quickly arose and with little to no time to recover mentally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/great-resignation-resource-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Resignation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit last year, it shouldn\u2019t have come as a surprise to anyone. And even less surprisingly,\u00a0 it\u2019s not showing any signs of slowing down. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/the-great-attrition-is-making-hiring-harder-are-you-searching-the-right-talent-pools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by McKinsey shows that 40% of workers are thinking about leaving their jobs. And why wouldn\u2019t they? In 2022, more than 42% of tech workers report having high levels of exhaustion according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent30.net\/hubfs\/7677235\/The%20State%20of%20Burnout%20in%20Tech%20-%202022%20Edition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnout Index<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media2.giphy.com\/media\/eYilisUwipOEM\/giphy.gif?cid=790b761178707033600c37241ff32e9ada12ce40eb706e14&amp;rid=giphy.gif&amp;ct=g\" alt=\"Working from home\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Resignation has turned into the \u201cGreat Rethink,\u201d as coined by Harvard professor and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harperbusiness.com\/book\/9780063088917\/Deep-Purpose-Ranjay-Gulati\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep Purpose: The Heart and Soul of High-Performance Companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ranjay Gulati. People are looking for something different as we settle into the post-pandemic era, something that truly works for them. And they\u2019re willing to give up other things in order to get the flexibility and the work-life balance they\u2019re looking for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work (mostly) when it works for you<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some people are being ushered back to the office, others are sticking to their newfound remote cultures, and a lucky few have been told, that \u201cHey, the choice is yours.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/join-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resource Guru<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many tech companies are fully remote and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/time-zone-improvements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work across multiple time zones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing employees to (mostly) work when it works for them. With the 9-5 grind soon to be a distant memory, async work is what will continue to facilitate personal productivity more and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But productivity is a tricky thing. It doesn\u2019t always work the way we want it to.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Master-your-own-productivity\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master your own productivity<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When inspiration strikes, productivity often follows. But the annoying thing is that productivity \u2013 and definitely inspiration \u2013 can strike at any time. (Say, just like right now at the airport.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are ways to optimize your day for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your chronotype<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue with the traditional workplace is that it\u2019s standardized. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/page\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans are not<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celine Vetter, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and director of the university\u2019s circadian and sleep epidemiology lab recently told the Times that \u201ca full 80 percent of people have work schedules that clash with their internal clocks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve always known I\u2019m more productive in the afternoon and in the evenings. But the problem is that society has always celebrated early risers. Early bird gets the worm and all that. A 9 am meeting? That\u2019s too early in my book. All those CEOs that allegedly get up at 5 am? No, thanks. I like late mornings and late nights. Whipping out my laptop in bed at 10 pm and churning out a bunch of work is my normal. But more importantly \u2013 it works for me. That&#8217;s because I\u2019m a wolf.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had never heard about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ultrahuman.com\/blog\/your-sleep-animal-the-ultimate-productivity-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronotypes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until I came across an article about a startup in Berlin (where else?) that used them for their employees. A chronotype is the behavior we demonstrate based on our circadian rhythm, our natural internal clock that controls our sleep\u2013wake cycle. But it\u2019s not just about sleep,\u00a0 it determines our productivity levels during the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i.insider.com\/57ead17cb0ef97b3088b87e3?width=1300&amp;format=jpeg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The four chronotypes\" width=\"1300\" height=\"1623\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ideal schedule for each chronotype.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3818690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surrounding chronotypes started already in the 1970s, but it wasn\u2019t until the 21st century the workplace caught up with, well, biology. Today, four animal chronotypes exist to help group and generalize circadian rhythms found in nature. Most people (around 52%) fall into the Bear chronotype, which means their sleep pattern follows the sun. While others (such as myself) might favor a later start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to nerd out on the topic, there\u2019s loads of information on it, but the long and the short of it is: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late birds get to eat, too<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So go ahead and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesleepdoctor.com\/sleep-quizzes\/chronotype-quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find out your own chronotype<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and start making the most of your productivity highs while working your way around the lows.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lean into productivity bursts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what I\u2019m doing right now. Because when inspiration comes, productivity follows. I\u2019d never recommend anyone to work at an airport, but if the moment&#8217;s there, all \u201crules\u201d go out the window. And the truth is, productivity can be a bit of a bastard, striking at inconvenient times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s even more inconvenient is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/brain-distraction-procrastination-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our brains are designed to be distracted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (gee, thanks evolution) and our ability to focus happens in bursts. We simply <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work uninterrupted. (Find more on this research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0896627318306366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) But the key is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/project-managers-resource-utilization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">balanced work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might have heard of the Pomodoro Technique. It\u2019s a productivity technique that\u2019s all about leaning into the body\u2019s natural rhythm, working in 25-minute bursts. Another technique follows the Ultradian Performance Rythm, using 90-minute bursts. Some might experience longer bursts, while others dip sooner. It can also depend on the task itself. But whenever your burst happens, go for it. Will it mess up your daily plan sometimes? Sure. Will you get more out of it? Absolutely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.any.do\/blog\/productivity-methods-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plenty of productivity techniques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out there to try, but it\u2019s about finding <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your rhythm<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and then getting to work. We\u2019re all wired differently, so allow yourself to figure out what works for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Work hard, disconnect harder<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In hustle culture, rest was perceived as \u201clazy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the truth is that rest is essential to our productivity. It allows our brains to problem solve, innovate, and actually increase our productivity. Because when we\u2019re resting, our brains are still active, engaging what\u2019s called its \u201cdefault network.\u201d Now, this is something that we\u2019re not in control of. This is the reason people come up with ideas and solutions in the shower, when running, or simply going about their daily chores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is also why disconnecting is so important. If we push ourselves to work for too long, it kills productivity. So next time you hit a dip, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/resource-management-techniques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rest without feeling guilty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a top-down kinda thing<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/blog\/resource-guru-turns-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Company culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t just a list of values. It\u2019s about demonstrating those values every day through behavior. And while company culture is everyone\u2019s responsibility, it\u2019s important that management sets the example. Because the management team shouldn\u2019t be just managers, they should be leaders that create a culture where employees feel supported and confident in doing their job on their terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to be vocal about what you need in order to be productive. Your manager and team won\u2019t know unless you tell them. You\u2019re not being difficult or demanding by communicating what works for you \u2013 you\u2019re setting not just yourself, but the entire team up for success. To no one\u2019s surprise, last year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/smarterwithgartner\/digital-workers-say-flexibility-is-key-to-their-productivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43% of digital workers reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they achieve greater productivity with flexible working hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See? It\u2019s a win-win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/emtemp.gcom.cloud\/ngw\/globalassets\/en\/articles\/images\/flexible-working-hours-enable-remote-workers-to-increase-productivity-0.png\" alt=\"Digital workers report increased productivity \" width=\"1330\" height=\"1642\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workplace today is hugely different from what it used to be. And this is just the beginning of the remote revolution as employees are less willing to compromise on their work-life balance. In June, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gusto.com\/company-news\/business-implications-of-remote-work-for-HR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a report from Gusto <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% of people who declined their last job offer cited a lack of flexibility and work-life balance as the main reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust me, if your employer isn\u2019t flexible enough for what you need, I guarantee you there\u2019s another one out there that is. (Did I mention that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resourceguruapp.com\/join-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resource Guru is hiring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?)<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more flexible future<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So as we evaluate how and where we spend our time, there\u2019s no doubt we\u2019re heading toward a future of more flexible work where individuals gain more autonomy over their time. Because let\u2019s be real, it wasn\u2019t always a two-way street between employers and employees \u2013 but a second lane is opening up.
